Another bumper year for Menorcan airport
2007 was another bumper year for the airport in Menorca, proving the island’s continued popularity as a top tourist destination. 2.7 million passengers passed through it last year. That’s 3.2 per cent more than in 2006.
But while the number of domestic flights to and from other Spanish
airports went up, the percentage of international flights dropped
slightly. Just over half of all the passengers were flying domestic,
for the first time in Menorca’s history. That mix has changed
significantly in the last few years. In 2003, only 36 per cent of
passengers were domestic.
Because passenger figures have risen, what this change is likely to signify is that Menorca is becoming a holiday destination of choice for Spanish residents. It’s already a popular choice for discerning holidaymakers from the UK and Germany.
As you would expect, the busiest month for the airport was August, with more than half a million passengers recorded. A surge of British passengers was thanked for breaking the record for the busiest month ever.
The quietest month was January with just 64,000 passengers. It’s statistics like that which prompted the island to officially extend the tourist season.
In 2008, it’s easier to get to Menorca from the UK thanks to a series of new flights that have been announced.
Monarch Airlines had a new connection from Gatwick that started on the 21st March and easyJet also announced a new service also from Gatwick. It’s started to share routes with GB Airways ahead of its purchase of the airline from British Airways.
Work on the new Menorca airport terminal has finished and it will be fully operational for the summer season.
