Location/Comments

Location
The apartment is situated at the top of a pine clad hill in the popular resort of San Jaime. The resort can be found approximately half way along Menorca\'s south coast around 30 minutes drive from Mahon airport. Your first view of San Jamie will take your breath away! The road leads down through a small tunnel cut into the rocky hill side, and a spectacular view opens up of the resort and its magnificent beach. Pale golden sand stretches for about 3km, making it the longest beach on Menorca, and one that because of its size, never gets over crowded.

The sands slope gently down into clear blue waters, which on calm days offer excellent bathing and water sport facilities. The usual sun beds and umbrellas are available to hire, as well as pedaloes, and water-skiing, jet skiing and windsurfing are awaiting the more adventurous. Beach bars are on hand to satisfy any immediate refreshment requirements and there is a red cross centre above which flies a red flag should bathing not be safe.

The beach is within easy walking distance of the centre of the resort. There, can be caught, the land train which offers an excellent and enjoyable way to see Son Bou and its immediate neighbour San Jaime. The two are made up of mainly low level developments and villas nestling into the low pine clad hills behind.

Between them, Son Bou and the more residential, San Jaime, offer a wide selection of bars, restaurants and shops, catering for all tastes and requirements. There are children\'s play areas, water chutes and a newly opened maze which offers mind boggling and often frustrating entertainment!

For those who seek more of the ancient Menorca, at the eastern end of the resort is the headland Cap de Penyes, which is honeycombed with caves - a typical village which would have been hollowed out of the hillside before concrete was invented! Here can also be found the remains of a fortified talayotic village and at the foot of the cliffs, the remains of an early Christian basilica, which would have been the focal point of the village in the 4-5 century, Ses Canessies, the name by which Son Bou was formally known.

And finally for those interested in wildlife, the beach as it progresses further west, becomes wilder and quieter. It is also backed by marshland which is home for a thriving bird population.
Guestbook
\"Thank you for letting us use your apartment in Menorca, it was just lovely and we had a great time. So much we would like it next year for 3 weeks!\"

\"We\'ve loved our time here, staying in your beautiful home and exploring the island. The weather has been great!\"

\"Having a fantastic time, feel good and rested and we\'re only half way through! Weather is hot hot hot - perfect! Spent the first day flaked out on the beach at Son Bou but are now on tour of the various coves. Spent yesterday at Cales Coves, today at Cala Marell. We can understand why you spend so much time here now!\"

\"Sunny sun the sandy beach! The balmy breeze at night. The friendly chat, as we relaxed, the stars so deep and bright. Menorca is the isle of peace, to chill and clear your mind. Enjoy the beach, the wine and sea, be cool and just unwind.

You couldn\'t ask for more in life, as you take in the air. The \'rat race\' that you left behind, now you don\'t have a care! Paella\'s good, riocha\'s there, so fill that empty glass, enjoy the pace, slow right down, slower, not too fast!

It\'s just a week but we\'re away, forget what\'s gone before. Have a swim, go into town, or walk along the shore! Siesta time, now close your eyes, now listen! quietly dream! Clear all thoughts and feel the sun, warming and serene.

The quiet that you feel is yours! Sleeping deep, eyes closed. Dream on! Dream on! and calmly rest, it\'s just what you supposed. It won\'t be long before we\'re back, our holiday is through! I won\'t forget the time we had, what can I say?...... thank you!\"

Eating Out:
There are several restaurants and bars on the Son Bou complex. Most of these are reasonably priced and are suitable for families and children. If you want to travel further afield there are restaurants in most of the nearby towns.

Food Shopping:
During the holiday season there are a few small supermarkets on the complex. For more variety there are large supermarkets in Alaior, and a large \'out of town\' store at San Luis.

Speciality Shopping:
Look out for leather and footwear, particuarly the Menorcan sandals (Avarques).

Jewellery - You will find stalls and shops particuarly near the harbours of Mahon, Es Castell and Cuitadella.

Ceramics - Shops by the port of Mahon have a good range - also \' The Castle \'(see below)

Lladro - \'The Castle( between Ferreries and Cuitadella has the best choice on the island, but there are shops in Mao, Es castell and Fornells with a new one opened in San Luis.

Cheeses - Different regions produce their own speciality cheese - sold in varying degrees of maturity. There is a cheese museum at Ferreries.

Gin - The best place to buy this is at the Xoriguer factory on the quayside at Mahon... you can try before you buy!!

Places to Visit:
Mahon (Mao) - The island\'s capital is well worth a visit. Enjoy a lovely walk past the yaghts and fishing boats before exploring the shops. Boat trips can be booked near the port.

Cuitadella - Originally the capital, this town is well worth visiting. Most of the streets are narrow and typically Mediterranean. There is a lovely promenade walk past the Club Nautic which leads to the recently restored Castle of Saint Nicolau at the entrance to the harbour.

Fornells - This beautiful fishing village is renowned for the quality of it\'s restaurants. The palm tree lined promenade is truly stunning!

Mercadal - Just outside the town is the island\'s highest point - Monte Toro (1000ft approx). Originally the site of an Augustinian Monastery, part of which remains. It is now owned and looked after by Nuns. The church is open to visitors, the views from the top are truly spectacular and apparently on a clear day it is possible to see Mallorca!

Es Castell - Situated at the mouth of the port of Mahon is another pituresque town full of history and another source for great restaurants.

Fiestas - During the Summer months it is well worth checking to see if there will be any local Fiestas during your stay. Fiestas usually last 3 days and involve horse riders parading through the streets, giant carnival figures and townsfolk led by the Fabioler - a flute playing man on a donkey. Folk dancing and firework displays end the celebrations.

Walking
Menorca is renowned for it\'s many stunning walks and our appartment is perfectly placed if you are feeling energetic!
We often walk to the end of the beach and then return along the roped walkway through the dunes. One of our favourite walks takes you from Son Bou beach to the resort of Santo Tomas, where it is possible to enjoy a drink or a meal in one of the many bars and restaurants.
